More thoughts on Emerson Wattson Analog

More on Emerson Watson Analog Streammer /DAC by Eric L

Letter from Hong Kong (21-4): Emerson Watson DAC, Part II

Edited 6/15/21

I have been using Emerson Wattson Analog (EWA) for many months and the more I listen with EWA, the more it has become indispensable to me.

It is so compact that it disappears in my setup nicely (behind my TV); I like that since I'm a minimalist and size matters in an opposite way to the majority of hifi enthusiasts.

Since I don't have an iPhone which supports EWA's own App, I have to use a uPNP app by MConnect (free Lite version). It is a bit inconvenient: once listening to Tidal, the music will not continuously play even if you have selected it; the App will pause as soon as the phone is in lockscreen mode. That forces me to unlock the phone and select the App again and it will automatically play from my selected list again. This will not happen when I open the Tidal App to directly play through my BT device. It's just that the sound quality of EWA is so addictive that I'm willing to go through the extra hassle.

I have read a lot of reviews on the internet, ranging from with lukewarm to enthused, but there are some virtues that it has which has not being mentioned and I would like to point out a few based on my extended listening experience.

First of all, I have been spoilt by the natural presentation of EWA. I have never sensed even a bit of digital hardness and congestion, except on a few really shitty recordings, which only happens rarely. Whereas, I often sense congestion playing through my Sparkler CDP with some lesser CDs. To me, the term "sounding analog" cannot fully describe the sound of EWA. There's a kind of rightness and pitch perfection that makes music very very easy to follow. Phrasing of passages become more easy to identify and appreciate. One can effortlessly clearly hear the difference in playing with different pianists playing the same tune: whether the right hand or left dominates, the interpretation more dramatic or poised, more passionate or cooler in presentation etc. EWA just reveals effortlessly and matter-of-factly. Details never sound forced, simply proferred in a relaxed yet precise way.

With EWA, I hear more essential details to help me understand the meaning of the song and different interpretations. I tap my feet due to the assured pace and tempo. To be honest, the music style of EWA is not hot-blooded (usually when something is played in a faster tempo); EWA just displays whatever there is in the recording, and yet it never fails to be uninteresting or lacking in beat and foot tapping elements !

Is the setup musical, engaging and involving? This is the most important question and prerequisite for me! The answer is a big YES!! Its slightly detached style works in really beneficial ways: absolutely no coloration added; harmonic and instrumental decays nicely portrayed; good sense of tempo; analog sounding; and most importantly, allowing one to relax and yet be involved and immersed in the music. What more can one ask for? And yes, sound is free from even one bit of grain and compression; highs are airy and pristine, with top class dispersion and extension; mid's have the right intensity, yet never overdone; low end is rock solid. It played in temp and with authority, providing a solid foundation few equipment at this price point can match.

Yes, I may not be drawn to it every moment while playing music, but it's so effortless it kind of feels like BGM, but in a good way - I still immensely enjoy all the details and inner messages of every piece of music. Its never fatiguing nor in-your-face style allows me to keep on listening. Come to think of it, I have never come across a piece of equipment of this price point that can come close to its performance, period!!

I'm using it with the iFi powers supply that came with the package. As I am so content with the current music performance, I just do not have the urge now to try out a nice LPS.

For anyone who is looking at a simple one-stop solution and not listening much to CDs and want to stream music through Qobus and Tidal, this is definitely worth an audition. For $1600USD, it is not cheap but in terms of quality it far more than satisfactory!

Follow up on WE Amp , JBL L300, Rayaudio's Class A mono amp, Philips LHH2000 and the humble K-16 BT device

Letter from Hong Kong (21-2): Eric L on WE, JBL L300 and More

Now that the WE Amp has been revamped by Ray and soon shall be back to the owner, I would definitely not let go of a chance to hear it with the JBL L300 and Philips LHH2000. Both classic gears (though not quite in the class of WE IMO).

Last time, I felt that I only got a glimpse of what the WE can achieve, not its full potential. This time, I was able to hear different types of music, from classical music with demanding and complicated passages to vocal oriented stuff.

At the same time, Ray brought his Pure Class A Mono Amps for comparison, and it was nice to have a benchmark to compare, to see if Ray's amps are really of high quality.

WE finally showed its true colours, handling complicated passages with ease. The sound extended beyond the walls and filled the space all the way up to the ceiling - tons of air! Dynamics were respectable and it fully recreated the huge soundstage without strain and grain. Just loved what I heard as the tubes added magic to the music. The whole system produced a complete sound which was a joy to hear. At ease, yet dynamic!

Substituting the Ray Amps, the sound took a different path: more impactful, upfront and extremely fast transients!

I brought the K16 cheapo BT device and tried it out. Since K16 has very low gain, sound from WE was lifeless. But with Ray's amp, sound came to life and was respectable, dynamic, musical and enjoyable. Though the owner said its SQ was poor,  I would slightly disagree with him as I thought it to be very listenable. For this price, no complain at all~

My music selection:

Introducing a budding new star from China: Curley Gao, aka Curley, Xilin or Curley G. She has got a husky and smoky voice that is very charismatic and somehow addictive, if you dig this kind of voice. In this video, she's singing along with some classic legendary singers. Although Joey trumped her in just sheer presence and voice control (as well as Zhang's usual "killing you softly" love song) Curley did not shy away at all and sang her heart out! I believe in time, she can transform into a superstar!

Wrap up for year 2020 and looking ahead to 2021

Letter from Hong Kong (21-1): Eric Lo Sums Up 2020 and Looks Forward to 2021

A lot has happened in Year 2020. Especially in HK , we are still under the Fourth Wave of COVID attack while my sisters remarked that The US still has not recovered from the First Wave!

Due the nature of my profession, there is never a case of WFH to me; whether this is a blessing in disguise or not, who knows!

I appreciate this space where I can scribble down some of my music and audio thoughts and discuss my experience and take on music appreciation. I hate to use the term Hifi listening since Hifi is the means and not the most important aspect. Music enjoyment is the end product and is paramount. The priorities must not be reversed.

I seldom read Hifi mags and reviews, unless I am interested in acquiring a certain piece of equipment. I will then google it and find some relevant info online. Much like the restaurant guide website Openrice in HK,  I get the necessary ifno but largely ignore the reviews by members. I will at times read the reviews lightheartedly and take them with a grain of salt and not be too serious about them!

I trust my ears: years of listening to music and my deep love for it are my most important tools for critique. They have never failed me so far. One thing very important is to know your setup's limitation and to tailored it to shine on what you really treasure most. Of coz, those who look for full orchestra playing Wagner in large music hall will definitely need to spend a whole lot more , or go with horns to achieve the outcome!

To me, what I treasure most is the music connection to my soul through the setup. What I would like to feel holistically from the musicians are the feelings, the excitement, the mood and the technique that brings these virtues to the audience. I love to feel the interaction between the musicians, the combativeness, even antagonism, the melding and blending. Timing is extremely important as well, whether they play in perfect sync or deliberately play off beat to create the effect they want us to hear, these are the things that I would look for in particular; also the dynamic contrasts, microdynamics, and the vocal signature of each singer. Last but not least, foot-tapping factor is of utmost importance! The more feverishly I tap, the better the performance coming from the setup ! Without it, it would be meaningless; with even the most revealing equipment with fathomless soundstage and accuracy, if I cannot feel the emotions and heat from the performer, it would mean nothing to me. Of coz, my ultimate goal is embrace all hifi and musical aspects, all in one for truthful playback - no more, no less, no coloration, yet sounding natural more than neutral.

Here were my own important acquisition of the year 2020 in Hifi (5 stars being most important)
  1. iCon4 AVC preamp  *****
  2. Steaming of Tidal *****
  3. Cheapo Taobao Bluetooth device  H-10U *****
  4. Auralic Vega DAC ***1/2
  5. Micromega MyDac - surprise of the year which I will write a follow up on it separately ****
  6. Gotham cables , RCA, power cord and Digital cable****
  7. Office setup (NAIM SBL, Musical Fidelity A1s , Project 1.3 T.T. and Phono/Line amp by Rayaudio which is covered already in my recent post. ***
  8. Youtube streaming with Premium version sans the annoying ADs ****
iCon4  allows me to connect my 47 Lab Gaincard to different sources without altering the sound character. And this year I have tried different sources and am extremely fascinated., like a kid in a candy store!

Tidal is absolutely a great invention which allows me to connect to a sea of music at home or on mobile! And sound quality is respectable as well!

Bluetooth H-10U is definitely a bargain product of year 2020. I in turn poisoned many friend after being poisoned by my friend Kwong, much like in the zombie movies, haha! Sound coming out is coherent and has all the virtues that I am looking for, foot-tapping, exciting and musical, yet not sterile at all! Especially playing music from Youtube!

Auralic Vega allows me to explore different types of digital sources and use of CAS through my laptop and is quite a versatile unit indeed! Sound is quite good but is a bit polite in ultimate terms.

Micromega MyDac is definitely a steal with the musicality, soundstage and full, round, tuneful and ripe bass. It can even play through my laptop!

Gotham cables as raved by Doctor is definitely no slouch and all their cables are great, in particular GAC4 interconnect! Must-have for budget minded folks like mine!!

Office has become a experimental ground for exploring different setup under a limited environment. The system sounds decent but surely a lot of improvement can be obtained. But I am already extremely happy with the Sony Discman fed to MF A1s and Naim SBL!!

Upgrading membership of  Tidal and Youtube allows me to stream Youtube without the annoying Ads which  is definitely big big plus for me!

Looking ahead , I am still looking for the best way to online streaming of Tidal music. I have acquired a Emerson Wattson Streamer/DAC recently and will see how it fares!

Also, I would love to have more home visits to broaden up my horizon ! There are so many aficionados with different paths and beliefs in Hifi and it'd be nice to learn from them!

Auralic Aries Mini Lite DAC-AH Realistic Loudspeakers

Letter from Hong Kong (20-9): Eric L experiences a setback
Virtual Home Visit (15): Realistic Loudspeakers!

Auralic Aries Mini, Laptop, Naim SBL and Home Visit

Contrary to mrgoodsound's recent post on his HP Laptop's performance, I couldn't have been happier with my current setup with my HP Laptop streaming Tidal and Youtube, which comprise now my main source!

Auralic Aries Mini Recently I acquired an Auralic Aries Mini with a local LPS from 2nd hand market and I immediately hooked it up to my system. Got an old iPhone from my wife for song selection; hooked up the Wifi and I was all set to go!

To my disappointment, at once I observed that the soundstage had collapsed, the airiness had completely disappeared and the overall sound had become uninteresting. I had no choice but to put it aside and go back to my Laptop (with the Auralic Vega DAC) and everything became normal again! Later, based on my poor experience, I suspected the cheap LPS did more evil than good. I switched to the unused cheap stock SMPS. The sound improved but was still inferior to my Laptop!

I was very miserable since I had high hopes that the little streamer can be a giant killer. It turned out it was being killed by another David!! I emailed to Auralic and asked them why the sound though my Laptop was way way better than the Aries Mini, but it seemed they did not grasp what I was trying to get at. You see, the Auralic Driver for the Vega that I had downloaded from their website and use on my laptop, I think it automatically upsamples the music files to 384kps from 44.2 or 48  (you can choose different sampling rate through the pull down menu) and it has sounded extremely well and musical. I suspect this free driver software makes all the magic happen!

My Aries Mini is still here, and I have not given up hope yet (it does register 88.2kHz on some Tidal music files). I will pair it with a proper LPS to see if that really helps. Also I will be receiving an Innuous Zen Mini MkII for trial. My search for streamer has not ended yet, just that progress is slow...

Lite DAC-AH To report on the Lite DAC-AH, which my friend had snatched from me (I poisoned him in fact by lending it to him for trial). He said, once hooked up, it sounded way way better than the internal DAC of his Audionet ART II (Not V2). This little workhorse runs hot but, like my friend said, it does wonders, and costs only HKD 1200! It seemed all the upgrades he made (Audionet bi-amped, top speaker wires from Audioplan and Gotham cables) only served to strengthen the Lite DAC-AH! Well, can't wait to hear the setup, but he lives just too far away. From what he said, the whole system is very musical, smooth and with solid foundation - very promising indeed. [Ed: see Footnote 1]

Home Visit Went to another friend's place to pay a visit to his setup built around some very unusual equipment. All his equipment is housed in his study room. In the picture is the famous TAD TSM-300, but he chose to showcase his cheapo tiny Realistic desktop speakers (8" tall) made in Canada, BUT the crossover is an aftermarket one that cost a whopping USD 1,000!! DIY silver cables, NAS with hard drives and laptop fed through an unnamed (again)  DAC to his multi-TVC passive line amp (cover sealed with special screws to prevent being opened up by customers...) then to Monarch Audio Monoblocks. Routers and DAC also had dedicated LPS (Monarach Audio is designed and built by the former owner of a Hifi shop in HK, selling first generation Audion Silver night). [Ed: see Footnote 2]

To describe the sound: it has an intensity and density that is rarely found in  many setups. I am not saying that my setup in comparison is thin or pointy in imaging, which it is not. But his is remarkably dense and quite neutral and musical. However, it gets a bit congested when playing complicated passages and can only give you limited bass, which is already very impressive, though limited by its physical size. It is always nice to hear different setups to learn from it.

What's Next While I'm still in the midst of looking for a Streamer, the drive is less since the music streamed through Tidal from my Laptop directly connected to my Vega DAC is so involving. Despite not being be the most hifi, the system is extremely musical, natural sounding with no colorations and highly listenable and enjoyable. I can listen 90% of the time to Tidal's random choice of songs and enjoy the music coming out of the system for hours without the urge to adjust or change. Same for playing You Tube videos, which are also very engaging and analog sounding too~. By the way, I have just upgraded to You Tube Premium and happily bade farewell to the annoying ads!!!! It's so satisfyingly and convenient that I seldom play CDs through my Sparkler S503 CDP. I have to say, sometimes the CD sounds a bit more engaging but the convenience of music streaming is so handy that I can comfortably live with the little trade off!

That said, out of impulse, I fetched a pair of the once well regarded NAIM SBL on the cheap and will be used in my office for music during lunchtime or after office hour!! My friend will lend me his MF A1s, and another friend Audioplan speaker cables; add to it my Bluetooth H10U, I'm all set!! I'm still open to shopping for a cheap used amp like NuForce ST120 (for 250USD) or a Cambridge A75 (Duo Transformer mode; was told it's a poor man's Naim).

Stay tuned for more update.

Editor's Footnotes: 1) Lite makes a vast range of products, from circuit boards (e.g. of famous preamps), DIY and semi-DIY stuff. They are good value, though often clones (which I try not to promote). They make several DACs. The cheap and popular DAC-AH has been around for a long long time (see this enjoythemusic review). It was suggested to Eric L by Dexler Poppe. I am not surprised at all that it was much more musical than German Audionet, not one of my favorites (here is an episode where cheap iPod/Wadia iTransport was preferred to expensive German Acuustic Arts CDP); 2) This Home Visit illustrates the lack of space of a lot of HK audiophiles. The texture should be pretty good as there is not that much distance between the loudspeakers! European and Asian readers may not know about Realistic. It is the brand of the now defunct Radio Shack, which sold drivers and DIY stuff. Certain of their loudspeakers have an underground following. This model looks like the well regarded Minimus 7. Incidentally, the TAD TSM-300 will sound much better if placed horizontally, though he may not have the space.
